Description
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for grivasta gos, veliki prodnik and peščenec. About 25% of the grivasta gos population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the veliki prodnik population. Many waterfowl, such as morski prodnik, spremenljivi prodnik, komatni deževnik and školjkarica depend on the mudflats for their survival.
