Description
The shallow river Tsiknias flows to the sea east of Skala Kallonis. It is one of the larger rivers on Lesvos and a major migration corridor. Its mouth attracts waders, gulls and terns. Egrets, herons and storks and many songbirds can be found along its length and in the surrounding fields. Among the birds that you can encounter in the area are čebelar (they breed in the sandy river banks), slavec, črnoglavi strnad, smrdokavra, rjasta kozarka, duplinska kozarka, reglja, polojnik, beloceli deževnik, mali deževnik, veliki škurh, mali martinec, zelenonogi martinec, mala čigra, belolična čigra, beloperuta čigra, navadna čigra, kričava cigra, črna štorklja and many more. During spring migration also rarer wader species can be observed, for example mali prodnik, Temminckov prodnik, srpokljuni prodnik, togotnik, črni martinec, močvirski martinec and jezerski martinec.

Access
The Tsiknias river is easy accessible from Skala Kallonis. It is less than a 1 km walk. If you arrive by car you can park along the road and explore the area on foot. Click on the P in the map for directions.
