The Kuhgrabensee is the breeding ground of many birds, such as čopasti ponirek and vodomec. From autumn onwards, an abundance of birds can be found on the lake. Then it is home to numerous ducks, geese and other water birds for several months. Among the birds you can observe are belorepec, ribji orel, liska, žličarica, žvižgavka, zvonec, bičja trstnica, modra taščica, poljski škrjanec, črnoglavka, rjava penica, navadna postovka and rjavi lunj.
During the breeding season good observations of the young vodomec that have just fledged are possible near the bird hide. Many other birds can also be found in the adjacent meadows of the Polder Oberblockland.
