Lake of 8 hectare with a bird sanctuary island.
Lake Itzelberg was artificially created by the Cistercian monks from the former Königsbronn monastery who dammed the Brenz river. For centuries, the water was important for fish farming. At the inlet of the river Brenz in Lake Itzelberg a bird sanctuary island has been created. This wetland biotope attracts many birds. Birds you can observe include brinovka, siva pastirica, vodomec, mali ponirek, Mokož, liska and siva čaplja. In the winter months, many waterfowl, especially sivka, čopasta črnica and sometimes veliki žagar, rest on the lake and then travel on to their breeding grounds in spring. The lake is a popular local recreation area in summer, so this is not the best time for birding. A circular hiking trail of 1,5 km leads around the lake.
The Itzelberger See is located in Königsbronn. You can park in front of the lake. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.
