Description
In winter, the Hurstsee is home to a great number and variety of ducks and other waterbirds. There are good numbers (between 15 and 100+) of mlakarica, konopnica, čopasta črnica, sivka, liska and veliki kormoran.
Smaller groups of kreheljc and čopasti ponirek can usually be seen scattered across the lake. nilska gos and labod grbec are often present, as well as velika bela čaplja, siva čaplja, vodomec and siva pastirica along the fringes of the lake.
With a bit of luck, you can also see veliki žagar, žvižgavka, dolgorepa raca, reglja (on spring migration) or even a stunning mali žagar here!
Waterbirds are the main attraction, but the trees and bushes around the lake are worth checking too. There are plenty of common woodland / garden birds, plus a good chance of seeing (or hearing) any of the following: čižek, dlesk, kalin, siva pevka, rdečeglavi kraljiček, vinski drozg and črna žolna.
