Nature reserve with lakes, heathland and wet forest. The big diversity in habitats results in a high diversity in bird species.
The special feature of nature reserve Heiliges Meer are the numerous large and small bodies of water, which were created over thousands of years as a result of sinkholes. Together with nutrient-poor heathland and alder marsh forest it combines various habitats close to each other. Because of all these different habitats in a small area the nature reserve also has a high diversity of bird species. Among the birds you can encounter are hribski škrjanec, drevesna cipa, pogorelček, kobilar, Sršenar and mali detel.
Nature reserve Heiliges Meer is located on the northwestern border of Westphalia with Lower Saxony, 30 km northwest of Osnabrück, between the towns of Obersteinbeck and Hopsten on the L 504 road. Drive towards Hopsten by car. There is a public car park on "Hugostraße". From there, two hiking trails can be walked. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 4 km. Sturdy shoes are helpful in wet weather.
