Outside the dike there is an extensive salt marsh with some pools. An agricultural landscape extends inside the dike.
At Harlesiel and Elisabethgroden the areas outside the dike are particularly worth watching all year round. Due to the extensive salt marsh, the Wadden Sea is too far away to clearly see the birds there, but there are several pools/gullies outside the dike. Large groups of sabljarka and žličarka rest there between late summer and autumn. All four species of harriers (rjavi lunj, pepelasti lunj, močvirski lunj and stepski lunj) can be found in the salt marshes in summer. Large resting groups of geese and priba as well as zlata prosenka can be found on the agricultural lands inside the dikes, especially in autumn and winter.
Harlesiel and Elisabethgroden can ideally be cycled. Alternatively, you can drive along the dike and observe the agricultural lands from the car and stop at two positions on the dike and walk from there to observe the salt marsh and the pools. Click on a P in the map for directions.
