Description
The Eschefelder Teiche are a nature reserve located 30 km south of Leipzig. The area consists of 8 ponds and covers an area of 270 hectares. The ponds were artificially created in the 18th century for fishing. The largest pond is the pond near Eschefeld. The ponds are an important feeding, breeding and resting area for numerous waterfowl species. The surrounding area is mainly used for agriculture. On the edge of the large pond there is the Naturschutzstation (nature conservation station) Teichhaus. It is run by NABU (BirdLife Germany) and also has a restaurant. On the banks of the large pond on the artificially created dam you can find a bird hide.
The area has a rečni galeb colony on the largest of the 8 lakes. In the noisy colony črnovrati ponirek and črnoglavi galeb also find shelter. The most important breeding birds include bobnarica and čapljica, rjavi lunj, rakar, plašica, brkata sinica, slavec and modra taščica. All these species are best observed between April and early June. Depending on the season ducks like reglja, tatarska žvižgavka, zvonec, veliki žagar, žličarica, duplinska kozarka and dolgorepa raca can be seen.
During migration periods, other species arrive. ribji orel and belorepec are regular guests who prey on food in the waters. There are also črna čigra as well as mali galeb. Another interesting group during migration is resting waders. These include priba, mali deževnik, komatni deževnik, kozica, zelenonogi martinec, mali martinec, močvirski martinec, rdečenogi martinec and togotnik. Sometimes rare birds like prekomorski prodnik, jezerski martinec and ozkokljuni liskonožec are observed.

Access
The ponds are located between the villages of Frohburg and Eschefeld, about 30 km south of Leipzig. From Frohburg train station, take bus line 254 in the direction of Altenburg. Or on foot in 25 minutes from Frohburg in the direction of Eschefeld. You can also park at the Naturschutzstation Teichhaus Eschefeld (Teichhaus 1, 04654 Frohburg). Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 6 km.
