The Blankensee is a big and shallow freshwater lake within the valley of the small river Nieplitz.
The Blankensee can be overlooked best from a boardwalk near the village of the same name. Close views of brkata sinica and srpična trstnica, with luck also plašica, are possible from the boardwalk (no scope needed). bobnarica is often seen flying out of the reeds near the boardwalk, especially in winter. An occupied ribji orel nest can be seen from the boardwalk in summer.
Thousands of ducks and geese are on the lake in winter. mali žagar, veliki žagar and zvonec give good views. Others are sivka, čopasta črnica, žvižgavka and konopnica. belorepec is regularly seen. The most common large gull is rumenonogi galeb.
May is the month for črna čigra. With luck you can get beloperuta čigra and belolična čigra, too. Other good birds in spring are črnovrati ponirek, dolgorepa raca and big flocks of swallows.
Walking through the village (grilček, bela štorklja), make sure to have a look for vodomec along the river Nieplitz.
On the walk to the tower in the north you pass the small lake Seechen (diminutive of lake "See"). Chances are good for zvonec, mali ponirek and rjavovrati ponirek. From the tower you overlook the wetlands of the Ungeheuerwiesen. A breeding ribji orel, priba, kozica and with luck smrdokavra can be seen. In winter žerjav, zlata prosenka and northern geese are typical species. veliki srakoper is regurlarly seen in the open winter landscape.
You can get to Blankensee (Trebbin) by car, bus or bicycle. There is no useful train connection. There are two free car parks in the village of Blankensee from where it is best to walk to the observation points. The boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible.
