The Kaw marshes are a vast wetland to the east of Cayenne, ideal for observing mudflat, mangrove and also riparian bird species.
The Kaw river crosses the magnificent landscape of the Reserve Naturelle des Marais de Kaw. The mouth of the river is ideal for mangrove and mudflat species, while upstream, Wapou Creek is interesting for riparian species. The Canal du Roi which connects the Kaw river to the Approuague is also interesting, but it is not passable all year round.
Among the birds you can observe are: Greater Ani, Smooth-billed Ani, Zigzag Heron, Least Bittern, Stripe-backed Bittern, Cocoi Heron, Agami Heron, Pinnated Bittern, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Scarlet Ibis, Maguari Stork, Neotropic Cormorant, Rufous-sided Crake, Purple Gallinule, Azure Gallinule, Grey-cowled Wood-Rail, Wattled Jacana, Sungrebe, Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, Ringed Kingfisher, Green-tailed Jacamar, Band-tailed Nighthawk, Toco Toucan, Channel-billed Toucan, Long-winged Harrier, Black-collared Hawk, Rufous Crab Hawk, Greater Yellow-headed Vulture, Great Black Hawk, Hoatzin, Boat-billed Heron, Black-capped Donacobius, Pied Water-Tyrant, White-headed Marsh Tyrant, Capped Heron, Red-breasted Meadowlark, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Silvered Antbird, Gray-breasted Crake, White-winged Swallow, Anhinga, Ringed Kingfisher, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Rusty-margined Flycatcher, Piratic Flycatcher, Grey Kingbird, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Wing-barred Seedeater, Ruddy-breasted Seedeater, Masked Yellowthroat, Silver-beaked Tanager, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Black Caracara, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Short-tailed Parrot, Wood Stork, White Woodpecker.

To get to the Kaw marshes, you have to take the Kaw road to the end, which leads to the village. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The only way to explore the marshes is by pirogue or canoe. It is possible to rent canoes from many providers.
