Description
The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the modra taščica, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are rumena pastirica, svilnica, kmečka lastovka, polojnik and more.
Nearby žličarka and different heron species, such as kvakač are breeding, as well as navadna čigra and lebduh. Besides from that you can observe reglja and several limicole species during migration, such as togotnik, črnorepi kljunač (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), mali prodnik etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like repaljščica, črnoglavi muhar, pogorelček or kupcar, as well as vijeglavka. On the nearby fields you can observe španska kotorna, zlata prosenka (only during winter), priba and veliki strnad. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.
In the summer 2025 a prekomorski prodnik and a jezerski martinec were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a mala bela caplja x obalna čaplja hybrid several times in the area.
