Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding bobnarica, rjavi lunj, brkata sinica, bičja trstnica, srpična trstnica and occasionally rarities like trstni cvrčalec and rakar. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like črnorepi kljunač, togotnik, priba, rdečenogi martinec, školjkarica, komatni deževnik, and sabljarka.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like dolgorepa raca, žličarica, kreheljc and čopasta črnica. Winter brings mali žagar, zvonec, and pepelasti lunj. A regular resident is belorepec. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include kaspijska čigra and ozkokljuni liskonožec. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example prekomorski prodnik and črna štorklja have been observed.
