Nature reserve in the flood plain of the river Leie. Important wintering area for veliki škurh (up to 250 individuals).
The moist low-lying grasslands of nature reserve De Assels along the Leie are a resting area in winter for veliki škurh, belolična gos, žvižgavka and konopnica. As a breeding area it is interesting for trstni strnad, srpična trstnica, bičja trstnica and mali ponirek. Failed breeding attempts of črnorepi kljunač in 2023 and 2024.

Nederlands: De Assels is een natuurgebied in het overstromingsgebied van de Leie. Het is een belangrijk overwinteringsgebied voor de veliki škurh (tot 250 exemplaren). De vochtige laaggelegen graslanden langs de Leie zijn in de winter rustgebied voor veliki škurh, belolična gos, žvižgavka en konopnica. Als broedgebied interessant voor trstni strnad, srpična trstnica, bičja trstnica en mali ponirek. Mislukte broedpogingen van črnorepi kljunač in 2023 en 2024.
De Assels is located west of Ghent. Drongen station is within walking distance. Perfectly accessible by bike (bike route from Ghent Sint-Pieters station to Drongen. Parking at Drongen station. On foot a walk of 6 km, count on at least 2 hours. A round trip is possible by bike

Nederlands: De Assels ligt ten westen van Gent. Het station van Drongen ligt op wandelafstand. Perfect bereikbaar met de fiets (fietsroute van station Gent Sint-Pieters naar Drongen. Parkeren bij station Drongen. Te voet een wandeling van 6 km, reken op minstens 2 uur. Met de fiets is een rondrit mogelijk.
