Description

The Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen has long been one of the top inland sites for Belgian birdwatchers, and still remains a very good site even if wintering bird numbers are under a sharp decline. It features a diversity of water-habitats (influenced by the variable water height), such as a lake, old river meander, reedlands, ... There are some smaller forests and also large grasslands. It is easily visited, and the relatively large number of birders means that regularly a rarity is found.

Birding depends on water levels and seasons. Especially after a dry summer autumn can be disappointing, but bird numbers always increase in december. During January-May birding is often rewarding.

Just a few of the nice birds you can see here are plašica, modra taščica, žličarka and mali žagar.

When visiting on fair weather weekend days you can expect a lot recreation in the reserve, making birding less enjoyable. Note that 'De Afgraving' is added as a seperate site for people who don't have the time or ability to do the entire tour.
