Ancient hillfort surrounded by farmland, with good footpaths. The fields attract birds including kulík zlatý, škovránok poľný and strnádka lúčna.
Maiden Castle is a large hillfort with excellent of views of Dorchester and the surrounding area. It attracts many birds including strnádka lúčna, strnádka obyčajná, škovránok poľný, penica obyčajná, pŕhľaviar čiernohlavý, drozd červenkavý, drozd čvíkota, kulík zlatý and cibík chochlatý.
Maiden Castle is 2 miles from Dorchester town centre. There is a car park. Click on the P in the map for directions. Entry to Maiden Castle is free and the site is open during daylight hours. The circular walk indicated on the map is a simple 2 mile loop that does involve some gentle climbing and you will need to negotiate some kissing gates. Walking boots are recommended especially in winter. The site is very exposed, with no shelter.
