Schübelweiher is a picturesque nature reserve above the center of Küsnacht. Surrounded by a walkway, the artificial lake was once used to produce ice.
It is a breeding place for volavka popolavá that can be observed from the path, and a habitat for waterfowl and for birds living in extensively used meadows. It is also a spawning ground for numerous amphibian species. Bird species that can be observed here include volavka popolavá, trsteniarik malý, vrabec poľný, sliepočka vodná, lyska čierna, kačica divá, belorítka obyčajná, lastovička obyčajná, dážďovník obyčajný, jastrab krahulec, sokol myšiar (pustovka), myšiak hôrny, stehlík čížik, ďateľ veľký, sýkorka belasá, mlynárka dlhochvostá, sýkorka veľká, červienka obyčajná, pinka obyčajná, drozd čierny, škorec obyčajný, vrana čierna, kačička mandarínska, potápač veľký, hrdlička záhradná, holub hrivnák, and bocian biely.
There is a public car park next to the lake. However, travelling by bus number 912 from Zürich Bellevue or bus number 919 from the Küsnacht train station (both to the bus station Itschnach-Tägermoos) is recommended. You can also reach Schübelweiher on different walkways leading there from Küsnacht train station in ca. 40 minutes.
From February, volavka popolavá breed on an island. This allows fascinating observations of the feeding and the progress of the young birds from the walking path. Occasionally a bocian biely may be looking for a bite in one of the meadows next to the lake.
