Shallow bay which is part of the larger Sundsvall bay. Its large coastal meadows and bird cobs make it an excellent place for birding.

Description

Bergafjärden consists of a large coastal meadow in the middle and higher hill/mountainous areas to the north and south. Most of the coastal meadow has been turned into a large beach for tourists but there are parts untouched in the northern part of the bay. Over the years 207 species have been recorded. During winter ice-free periods are often birdrich although the shallow waters often makes it frozen during winters. labuť veľká, labuť spevavá, potápač malý, kačica divá, potápač veľký, hlaholka severská, čajka striebristá, čajka sivá and chochlačka vrkočatá are the common seafowl during this period. Among other birds hus divá, volavka popolavá, strakoš veľký, and orliak morský are uncommon. Wintering woodpeckers like žlna sivá, žlna zelená, and ďubník trojprstý can be found most years. Some years turpan čierny, potápač prostredný, ľadovka dĺhochvostá, turpan tmavý, chochlačka sivá and volavka popolavá also winter. In the forest most of common forest birds can be found. During invasions smrečiar krivonosí and krivonos bielokrídly can be found.

During spring most of the previously mentioned waterfowl become more common and in March many geese arrive. Larger amounts of hus divá (100 at most), and bernikľa veľká (100 at most) can be found. Often along it smaller amounts of bernikľa bielolíca and sometimes Hus siatinná, hus bieločelá, and even hus malá (only very rarley). Among water fowl, labuť spevavá (at most 300), hlaholka severská (at most 300), and kačica chrapka (at most 90) along with smaller amounts of turpan tmavý, kajka morská, potápač prostredný, potápač veľký, potápač malý, kačica divá, kačica lyžičiarka and kačica hvizdárka. Uncommon ducks in the area are kačica chripľavka, kačica ostrochvostá, and kačica chrapačka.

During spring many waders can be found. Most common among these are kalužiak červenonohý, kalužiak močiarny, kalužiak sivý, kulík riečný, sluka hôrna, kalužiačik malý, lastúrničiar strakatý, kalužiak perlavý, hvizdák veľký, kulík piesočný and bojovník bahenný. More rarely brehár hrdzavý, hvizdák malý, kulík zlatý kalužiak tmavý, pobrežník čiernozobý and pobrežník sivý can be found. During perfect weather even pobrežník hrdzavý, pobrežník belavý, pobrežník hrdzavý, pobrežník malý, brehárik ploskozobý or pobrežník krivozobý can be found although these are more common during autumn (while still being very rare).

During this period common terns (rybár dlhochvostý, rybár riečny, čegrava veľkozobá), common gulls (čajka striebristá, čajka morská, čajka tmavá, čajka sivá and čajka smejivá) and sometimes the rare čajka malá is found. At bergafjärden notable breeding birds are potápka chochlatá (some years, rare), kajka morská, turpan tmavý, bernikľa bielolíca, sokol myšiar (pustovka), potápka ušatá, čegrava veľkozobá, rybár dlhochvostý and rybár riečny. During early autumn large amounts of waterfowl, geese and waders can be found although these are often more numerous than in spring and arctic waders like brehárik ploskozobý are more common during autumn than spring. Most waders are found during august.
