Description
The Los Albardales Ornithological Reserve holds a big reedbed in an old meander of the Jarama River. The reserve is part of the Parque Regional del Sureste. It always was home to important wintering populations of passerines and other birds associated with migratory wetlands, like for example trsteniarik vodný, which found its only stopover location in the region here. But the last years were dry and in February 2023 the whole reed field has burned down. Fortunately, the area partly recovered the same year thanks to a lot off rainfall and a pair of šišila bocianovítá were breeding in the area in 2023. When the water conditions were good, and the area was not too dry, many birds species were observed here in recent years. For example kačica chrapačka, chochlačka bielooká, chriašť bodkovaný, sultánka modrá, bojovník bahenný, kalužiak močiarny, kalužiak červenonohý, šišila bocianovítá, volavka purpurová, kaňa močiarna, kúdeľníčka lužná and trsteniarik veľký. Best time of year for a visit is during autumn migration.

Espagnol: La Reserva Ornitológica Los Albardales recibe su nombre del carrizal homónimo, el cual ocupa aproximadamente 8 ha y se desarrolla sobre un antiguo meandro del río Jarama. Pertenece al Parque Regional del Sureste. La zona de pradera, inundada de mayo a octubre, sirve de área de sedimentación durante la migración de numerosas especies muy escasas en el ámbito de la Comunidad de Madrid. Es el caso del carricerín cejudo, que encuentra aquí su única localidad de paso en la región, o limícolas como correlimos, archibebes y combatientes.

Access
The Los Albardales Ornithological Reserve is located in San Martín de la Vega south of Madrid. You can park nearby and explore the area on foot from there. Click on the P in the map for directions. The birdhide in the area is useless as it is built to low and views are obstructed by the vegetation.
