A small grassland and marshy area in the middle of the city of Kigali.
Nyarutarama Lake is a good spot to go if you have a couple of hours in the morning to go birding. Located close to the conference center, it is easily walkable, or you can easily get a taxi to drop you off, and be back in time before the first events.
The area is quite degraded, with some trees, grasslands and marshes. There are paths to walk around. Nonetheless, you can still see a decent number of the more common east African birds, including Long-crested Eagle, Yellow-throated Longclaw, cisticolas, marsh/swamp warblers, egrets, herons, doves, weavers and bishops and so forth. A Bat Hawk has been occasionally seen, so keep your eyes out for anything unusual that can pop up.
Either walk down from your hotel, or catch a taxi. There is no parking lot.
This is a well trodden area, so expect some curious on-lookers. Seems mostly safe however.
