Olt is the longest river of Romania with many dams on it. One of them creates an attractive wetland close to Dragaşani. Great birding location for all seasons.
Because of the dam, there are several small ponds, canals and islands that attract many waterfowl and waders. The surrounding agricultural lands, reedbeds and bushy areas are rich with passerines, egrets and raptors. There are narrow paths that are used by local fishers that make the area easy to discover. Among the birds you can encounter are čorík bahenný, kaňa močiarna, včelárik zlatý, hrdzavka potápavá, chriašteľ vodný, volavka purpurová, strnádka trstinová and trsteniarik veľký. But many more birds to observe, see the birdlist below.
No public transport available apart from intercity minibuses if you get off on the road. It is a 30 minutes walking distance from Dragaşani city center. It is very easy to get there and discover the whole area by bicycle.
The main canal is dynamic, especially in winter. But the surrounding agriculture fields, small canals and islands are always on fire and full of surprises. It is possible to camp in the area close to river banks, but be aware of the possibility of immediate water level rise due to the dam. There could be local poachers in the area from time to time. No police or guard cares about the area. It is good to be watchful, especially in the hunting season.
