Description
Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain chain in mainland Portugal and Torre is its highest point. From this tremendous viewpoint, a brutal panorama is obtained over this whole landscape of valleys and rocks, in a mixture of shale and granite snaked by the blue of the water courses. Although above 1600 meters bird diversity drops, since trees are scarce or non-existent and landscape is barren and rocky, Torre is still a good place to observe, especially in summer, species like kaňa popolavá, bocian čierny, sup bielohlavý, krkavec čierny, škovránok poľný, skaliar pestrý, skaliarik sivý, vrchárka modrá, ľabtuška poľná and stehlík konôpka. In the winter, most of the birds leave the highlands due to extreme cold and regular snowfall, but even at this time of the year it is worth coming to Torre for birdwatching, since only at this time of year is it possible to observe vrchárka červenkavá, drozd kolohrivec, drozd čvíkota and snehuľka severská.
