Saltmarsh area right on the edge of city of Olhão. Very rich in waders/aquatic birds, especially in winter. Great spot to see plameniak ružový up close.
Salinas de Olhão is a very accessible area with nice variety of waders and other aquatic bird species in the area, especially in the winter. Species such as plameniak ružový, hvizdák malý, pobrežník belavý, pobrežník čiernozobý and trasochvost žltý can be seen quite close.
The saltpans are situated in the saltmarshes. Once you've parked you can easily enter the area walking or cycling and explore every saltpan that is accessible (some are blocked or there is no way to access without getting kneedeep in the mud). In the northern ones you will find ducks such as the kazarka pestrá, kačica divá and kačica chripľavka, whereas closer to the lagoon (sea side) you'll find more waders such as the pobrežník čiernozobý, pobrežník belavý, pobrežník krivozobý, kulík morský, kulík piesočný, hvizdák malý and šišila bocianovítá. A bit further way from the access, to the east, it is very common to find groups of plameniak ružový that allow bystanders to get quite close.
Very good place for watching waders and kršiak rybár. Best time of day about 2 hours after high tide. When water gets lower the birds spread out so they are further away then.
Top location. Many waders.
Also kulík morský, čegrava veľkozobá, slávik modrák, penica sivá, čajka tenkozobá, pobrežník malý seen on 17th October.
Currently (February 2025) less interesting since a huge building is being constructed. This disturbs the wildlife seriously.
