Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like čajka žltonohá, čajka tmavá and čajka smejivá. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like hvizdák malý, kamenár strakatý, pobrežník belavý and kalužiačik malý.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly rybár riečny and rybár štíhlozobý, but sometimes also rybár sivý.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of víchrovník plavý can be observed. Small numbers of víchrovec klinochvostý can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like víchrovník malý and víchrovník makaronézsky.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like čajka obrúčkozobá, čajka bielokrídla and, in 2011, a chavkoš žltočelý.
