Description

Albufeira de Santa Maria de Aguiar is housed in a valley with gentle slopes, where the Aguiar river flows. This reservoir is one of the most important wetlands in the district of Guarda. The scarcity of other wetlands nearby makes this area an important refuge for water birds, especially for potápka chochlatá, with this reservoir having one of the most important population centers nationally. Of the water birds also stand out species like kačica lyžičiarka, kačica divá, kačica ostrochvostá, kačica chripľavka, kačica chrapka, chochlačka sivá, potápka malá, lyska čierna, sliepočka vodná, šišila bocianovítá, šabliarka modronohá, volavka purpurová, ibisovec hnedý and lyžičiar biely. On the banks of the reservoir and the streams that flow into it, the aquatic and riparian vegetation is occupied by močiarnica mekotavá, chriašť bodkovaný, bučiačik močiarny, volavka popolavá, slávik obyčajný, cetia západná, svrčiak zelenkavý, trsteniarik veľký, trsteniarik bahenný,trsteniarik malý and rybárik riečny.

As regards the surrounding area, the vegetation is dominated by farmland, pastures and small forest areas that allow the presence of landbirds. In the bushes and trees of the east bank it is possible to hear and, with luck, observe species such as žlna zelená, ďateľ veľký, ďateľ malý, sojka obyčajná, vlha obyčajná, kuropta červená, prepelica poľná, penica fúzatá. You can also observe species like dudok chochlatý, včelárik zlatý, cibík chochlatý, strakoš červenohlavý, strakoš prieložný, straka čiernozobá, modraňa strakovitá and pipíška vavrínová on the banks of this reservoir. You should also prospect the skies, which are often crossed by large birds of prey, such as kršiak rybár, luniak sivý, zdochlinár biely, Včelár lesný, Black Vulture, sup bielohlavý, hadiar krátkoprstý, orol malý, orol skalný, kaňa močiarna, kaňa popolavá, jastrab krahulec, jastrab veľký, haja červená, haja tmavá, sokol sťahovavý, sokol lastovičiar, sokol myšiar (pustovka). In the skies you can also see several species of swallows: lastovička obyčajná, lastovička červenochrbtá, lastovička skalná, belorítka obyčajná, brehuľa hnedá; and swifts: dážďovník obyčajný, dážďovník skalný, dážďovník plavý.
