Description
The Balgzand is a birdrich part of the Wadden Sea. It's full of birds because twice a day the endless sand and mudflats become exposed at low tide. This is where lots of shellfish, worms, shrimps and snails can be found and that attracts all these birds.. In the spring, numerous birds, such as šabliarka modronohá, terns and seagulls, breed on the salt marshes formed against the dike. Even lyžičiar biely have successfully raised young here. In July, large groups of kazarka pestrá gather to moult. An impressive spectacle. In the winter months there are many kačica hvizdárka and bernikľa tmavá, who can take refuge at high tide on the quiet Balgzanddijk.

Nederlands: Nergens in Noord-Holland is het vogelleven zo rijk als op Balgzand. Het gebied ligt ten oosten van Den Helder en reikt tot het voormalige eiland Wieringen. Vanaf een aantal punten op de zeedijk heeft u een prachtig uitzicht op het wad. De beste punten zijn de vogelhut op de dijk ten noorden van Van Ewijcksluis, bij de Balgzandpolder en bij Informatiecentrum 't Kuitje. Let op de getijden, bij opkomend water vliegen de duizenden vogels in grote zwierige wolken richting dijk om daar te overtijen. Balgzand is zo geliefd bij ontelbare vogels omdat het twee maal per dag droogvalt en dan eindeloze zand- en slikplaten blootlegt, waar heel veel schelpdieren, wormen, garnaaltjes en slakjes voor de vogels te vinden zijn. In het voorjaar broeden er tal van vogels, zoals kluten, sterns en meeuwen, op de tegen de dijk gevormde schorren. Zelfs lepelaars hebben hier met succes jongen grootgebracht. In juli komen er grote groepen bergeenden bijeen om te ruien. Een spectaculair schouwspel. In het winterhalfjaar komen hier veel smienten en rotganzen, die bij hoogwater hun toevlucht kunnen zoeken op de rustige Balgzanddijk. Het Balgzand is dus een hoogwatervluchtplaats voor duizenden wadvogels die met vloed het droge opzoeken om er te wachten op eb. Soms kun je er enorme grote zwermen steltlopers zien vliegen. Een telescoop is wel echt een aanrader hier, want soms zitten de vogels best ver weg.

The best points for birding are the bird hide on the dyke north of Van Ewijcksluis and at Information Center 't Kuitje (see the link below), Oostoeverweg in Den Helder. Pay attention to the tides, as the water rises, the thousands of birds fly in large, elegant clouds towards the dike to rest there.
To get to 't Kuitje: From the N9 along the North Holland Canal, follow the signs 'Industrial Estate Oostoever' (exit N99). At roundabout industrial estate 2.5 km up and turn right 30 meters in front of the gate of the Navy. Due to the tranquility for the birds, this area is only accessible during excursions.
To the vantage point at Van Ewijcksluis on the Amsteldiepdijk: take from Den Helder on the roundabout the 3rd exit to the ventweg or take from Wieringen on the roundabout the 1st exit to the ventweg.

Nederlands: Het beste startpunt om je verkenning van het Balgzand te beginnen is natuurInformatiecentrum ’t Kuitje. Vanuit het natuurcentrum vertrekken tal van excursies, zowel vogelkijk- als wadexcursies. Maar 't Kuitje is lang niet altijd open. Wil je het natuurcentrum bezoeken, check dan eerst de website voor de openingstijden (zie de link beneden), want ook het gebied rondom 't Kuitje is alleen toegankelijk met een begeleide excursie.. Zo kom je bij 't Kuitje: Volg vanaf de N9 langs het Noord-Hollands Kanaal de borden ‘Industrieterrein Oostoever’ (afslag N99). Bij rotonde industrieterrein 2,5 km oprijden en 30 meter voor de poort van de Marine rechtsaf slaan.
Naar het uitkijkpunt bij Van Ewijcksluis op de Amsteldiepdijk: neem vanuit Den Helder op de rotonde de 3e afslag naar de ventweg of neem vanuit Wieringen op de rotonde de 1e afslag naar de ventweg.
Het vogelkijkscherm in de Balgzandpolder bereik je via de Oostoeverweg, Den Helder.
