Description
The Valkenburgse Meer is a recreational lake that was created in the 1950s by sand extraction. Although the area has a recreational function, the Valkenburgse Meer is also an important nature reserve. The lake and the surrounding meadows are an important area and stopping place for various species ducks, geese, meadow birds and migratory birds. In October, hundreds of cibík chochlatý often gather in the meadow area. Other birds you can see include kačica hvizdárka, kačica chrapka, kačica chripľavka, potápka chochlatá, lastúrničiar strakatý, strnádka trstinová, beluša veľká, lyska čierna, bocian biely and cetia západná.

Nederlands: Het Valkenburgse Meer is een recreatieplas van circa 50 hectare die in de jaren 50 is ontstaan door zandwinning. Het gebied heeft weliswaar een recreatieve functie, maar het Valkenburgse Meer is ook een belangrijk natuurgebied. Het meer en de omringende weilanden zijn een belangrijke gebied en pleisterplaats voor diverse soorten eenden, ganzen, weidevogels en trekvogels. In oktober verzamelen in het weidegebied vaak honderden kieviten. Andere vogels die je er kunt zien zijn onder meer kačica hvizdárka, kačica chrapka, kačica chripľavka, potápka chochlatá, lastúrničiar strakatý, strnádka trstinová, beluša veľká, lyska čierna, bocian biely en cetia západná.

Access
The Valkenburgse Meer is located on the A44, exit Leiden Zuid. From the direction of The Hague take exit 9, from Amsterdam take exit 8. Then follow the signs Valkenburgse Meer. There is ample parking. You will find a large parking lot on the southeast side, near the Steam Train Museum and the restaurant. Click on the P in the map for directions.

Nederlands: Het Valkenburgse Meer ligt aan de A44, afslag Leiden Zuid. Uit de richting Den Haag neem je afslag 9, vanuit Amsterdam neem je afslag 8. Daarna volg je de borden Valkenburgse Meer.
