Description

Naro Moru River Lodge is located at 1,970 meters (6,500 ft), tucked by the side of Mount Kenya, 16 km south of the Equator. The lodge gardens on one side of the Naro Moru River and the more wild riverine forest with open areas on the other side of the river attract a wide variety of bird species. More than 5 km of trails cross the area and make it easy to explore. The trails are quiet and beautiful and you can explore them safely on your own. Birds you can observe include Hartlaub's Turaco, Crowned Hornbill, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Red-fronted Parrot, Kikuyu White-eye, Purple-throated Cuckooshrike, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Tacazze Sunbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, Bronze Sunbird, Collared Sunbird and many more. Also very nice are the black and white colobus monkeys.

Access

Naro Moru River Lodge is located just outside the village of Naro Moru, just off the Nyeri–Nanyuki road. To reach the lodge from Nairobi, it's about a 180 km drive (approximately 3 hours without stops). The last km is on a gravel road, but okay to drive with a regular car.

You're not required to stay at the lodge; non-residents are also welcome to explore the lodges grounds. Of course, staying at the lodge does offer the advantage of being able to get out in the forest very early. The lodge has rooms, self-catering cottages, and a campsite and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The place is a nice stopover between Nairobi and Samburu and can also serve as a base for exploring Mount Kenya.
