Description
Oasi di Ponte Barca (also known as Barca di Paternò) is a protected natural area that is named after the ruins of an old bridge over the river Simeto. The wetland characterized by the presence of numerous river islets, large temporary marshes, vast areas of riparian forest and reeds. The presence of a dam and reservoir attracts numerous waterfowl. The importance of the reserve is also due to the fact that it has become a nesting place of the sultánka modrá which returned to reproduce in the seventies, thanks to a project carried out in collaboration with the LIPU (BirdLife Italy). Among the other birds you can see are kačica lyžičiarka, potápka malá, kaňa močiarna, beluša malá, hltavka chochlatá, čaplička vlasatá, chavkoš nočný, včelárik zlatý and cetia západná.

Italiano: L'Oasi di Ponte Barca (detta anche Barca di Paternò) è un'area naturale protetta che si trova nel territorio di Paternò, in provincia di Catania. Il paesaggio è caratterizzato dalla presenza di numerose anse, isolette fluviali, ampi acquitrini temporanei, vaste aree a bosco ripale e canneti. Zona umida, la presenza di una diga ha determinato la formazione di un invaso che attira numerosi uccelli acquatici. L'importanza dell'oasi paternese è dovuta anche al fatto che è diventata luogo di nidificazione del pollo Sultano, che è tornato a riprodursi negli anni settanta, grazie a un progetto realizzato nell'oasi del Simeto in collaborazione con la LIPU.
