Peninsula jutting 5 km into the big lake Balaton. The peninsula has two smaller lakes, marsh and some woodland.
The 77 km big Lake Balaton is located on the migration route for wetland birds, and the 562 hectares Tihany peninsula is a pinchpoint allowing the best viewing. The peninsula is a nature reserve with hills, marshy meadows and two lakes. The Inner Lake (Belső-tó) is almost in the centre of the peninsula but is heavily used by anglers and most of the time of little interest for birds. The Outer Lake (Külső-tó) is to the northwest is largely reed-covered and has breeding bučiačik močiarny, volavka purpurová, kaňa močiarna, kačica chrapačka and chochlačka bielooká as well as warblers. Rarer birds in the area include myšiak hrdzavý, sokol kobcovitý, potápač malý, slávik obyčajný, čajka bielohlavá, kormorán malý, potápka červenokrká, ďateľ prostredný and kúdeľníčka lužná.
Tihany is situated about 125 km from Budapest on the M7 then along the northern shore of Balaton on Road 71 and 180 km SE of Vienna. Click on a P in the map to get directions to a parking. The main Zagreb-Budapest rail line stops on the opposite shore, with a ferry link to cross the lake. The town of Balatonfured, close to the foot of the peninsula, also has a railway station and can be reached by rail from Budapest and there are buses to Tihany.
The peninsula has a network of footpaths and tracks and most is of open access, although permission to enter the vineyards should be sought. A road along the western edge of the peninsula is closed to vehicles but can be walked.
