Description
The Weiherwald offers a great range of habitats (mixed alluvial woodland, shallow ponds, streams, ditches, meadows, gardens), all in a very small area and close to an urban environment. It is very accessible with paths for pedestrians and cyclists transecting the area. These paths have two benefits: they makes bird observations easy and also mean that the birds are not too shy. A circular walk of the location covers all the habitats mentioned above, with many variations and little detours possible.
There is a notable population of 20 or more kačica chrapka present here in winter (and well into spring).
The Weiherwald is great for observing and hearing Woodpeckers, with five species possible all year round: ďateľ prostredný , ďateľ veľký and žlna zelená are common here and there is always a chance of tesár čierny and ďateľ malý, especially in winter.
The shallow ponds and ditches attract rybárik riečny, which can be seen fishing or flying from one area of water to another. trasochvost horský are sometimes present, foraging along the water's edges.
Small flocks of mlynárka dlhochvostá often roam the area, along with stehlík čížik, glezg obyčajný and the occasional drozd červenkavý in winter.
Late spring is a great time to listen to vlha obyčajná, slávik obyčajný and kolibiarik spevavý. With a bit of luck muchárik čiernohlavý can also be seen.
Other birds present all year round include králik ohnivohlavý, brhlík obyčajný, kôrovník krátkoprstý and sýkorka hôrna.
In addition to the fantastic birdlife, the Weiherwald is also a hotspot for many (rare) amphibians and insects. No matter what time of year or day, there's always something to enjoy here!
