Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see potápač malý, potápač veľký and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as kačica ostrochvostá, hlaholka severská, kačica hvizdárka, kačica chripľavka, kačica chrapka, kačica chrapačka, kačica lyžičiarka, chochlačka sivá, chochlačka vrkočatá, kazarka pestrá, bernikľa bielolíca, hus bieločelá, Hus siatinná and labuť spevavá. If you are lucky than you can spot a strakoš veľký in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe cibík chochlatý, pobrežník čiernozobý, kulík piesočný, kulík riečný, hvizdák veľký, brehár čiernochvostý, kalužiačik malý, močiarnica mekotavá, kalužiak močiarny, kalužiak perlavý, kalužiak tmavý, kalužiak červenonohý, kalužiak sivý and sometimes bojovník bahenný. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as potápka červenokrká or potápka malá or see a rybárik riečny.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and žeriav popolavý , herons and bocian biely. volavka popolavá and beluša veľká are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of bocian čierny.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of strnádka trstinová, strnádka lúčna, strnádka obyčajná, penica obyčajná, trsteniarik malý, trsteniarik bahenný, trsteniarik veľký, pŕhľaviar červenkastý, pŕhľaviar čiernohlavý, škovránok poľný and see for example strakoš obyčajný or trasochvost žltý.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see kaňa močiarna flying over the reed beds, in the whole area myšiak hôrny, haja červená and sokol myšiar (pustovka) are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a sokol sťahovavý or Včelár lesný. Also often seen are haja tmavá, kaňa sivá and kršiak rybár and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two orliak morský.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
