The site is a succession of mudflats, sand beach (free access) and coastal marshes (Marais d'Yves national nature reserve, restricted access).
Baie d'Yves is a major stopover and wintering site for waders, geese and gulls (kulík piesočný, kulík bledý, pobrežník hrdzavý, brehár hrdzavý, brehár čiernochvostý, pobrežník čiernozobý, pobrežník belavý, kalužiak sivý, lastúrničiar strakatý, bernikľa tmavá). The access to the beach makes it possible to approach the waders closely. Aim for a tide of at least 5,36 meters so that the waders are close enough when roosting at high tide. Stay on the beach, do not enter the Nature Reserve from the beach (restricted access). The Nature Reserve is accessible from the visitor center only, right next to the motorway.
By train: stop at Châtelaillon-plage station. Go south to the waterfront (46.053606, -1.078244) and continue south.
By car: park at the La Havane restaurant (46.051074, -1.068304), free car park, and head to the beach then south.
A tide of 5,36 meters or above will help push the roosting birds closer to the beach and improve viewing conditions. The observatory is in the nature reserve and is accessible only by booking in advance.
