Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (kačica chripľavka, kačica divá, kačica chrapačka, kačica hvizdárka, kačica chrapka and so on), kazarka pestrá and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are hus divá and bernikľa bielolíca. Rarer gooses like hus bieločelá, hus krátkozobá, bernikľa veľká, bernikľa červenokrká, bernikľa tmavá, hus tundrová and Hus siatinná are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are kalužiak červenonohý, kulík piesočný, lastúrničiar strakatý, kulík zlatý, cibík chochlatý, and bojovník bahenný. During migration kalužiak tmavý, šabliarka modronohá, pobrežník čiernozobý, pobrežník malý, pobrežník sivý, pobrežník hrdzavý, pobrežník krivozobý, hvizdák veľký and hvizdák malý have been recorded.
