Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding bučiak veľký, kaňa močiarna, fúzatka trstinová, trsteniarik malý, trsteniarik bahenný and occasionally rarities like svrčiak slávikovitý and trsteniarik veľký. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like brehár čiernochvostý, bojovník bahenný, cibík chochlatý, kalužiak červenonohý, lastúrničiar strakatý, kulík piesočný, and šabliarka modronohá.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like kačica ostrochvostá, kačica lyžičiarka, kačica chrapka and chochlačka vrkočatá. Winter brings potápač malý, hlaholka severská, and kaňa sivá. A regular resident is orliak morský. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include čegrava veľkozobá and lyskonoh úzkozobý. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example pobrežník škvrnitý and bocian čierny have been observed.
