A bird hide adjacent to Waterbird Lagoon. Part of Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area. More than 170 species have been recorded here.
Waterbird Lagoon is a Murray-Darling Basin wildlife haven. Many bird species flock to this lagoon when its semi-permanent waterholes fill with water. Nestled among rushes at the edge of one of the lagoons, the two-level bird hide provides views over the wetlands. Numerous waterbirds such as ducks, herons, cormorants, darters, ibis, spoonbills and Nankeen Night-Heron, as well as birds in the surrounding bush. Migrating birds stop here as they head north or south. Often White-bellied Sea-Eagle can be seen soaring overhead.
Gwydir Wetlands - Waterbird Lagoon is 60 km west of Moree along Watercourse Rd. Dirt road part way. Gates open 5 am to 8 pm. Amenities include a covered picnic area and a toilet. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates of the parking. From the parking at the picnic area it is a short walk to the bird hide. Not wheelchair accessible. It is possible to explore further into the wetlands by kayak/canoe. The location is not accessible during wet weather. Check with National Parks NSW or local Tourist Information.
