Description

Isla Martillo is famous for its penguin colonies. The Magellanic Penguin and Gentoo Penguin nest on the island. Occasionally you can see King Penguin on the island as well, but they don’t nest there. Of course also other bird species can be spotted, see the birdlist below.

On the island, you can walk along its shores and observe the penguins in their natural habitat. There are only 20 people allowed on the island at a time and you have to be accompanied by a certified guide. So if you book a tour from Ushuaia be sure that this is the case. The ideal time to explore Isla Martillo is from November to April. During this period, the weather is more favorable, and the penguins are active.

Access

Isla Martillo is located 70 km east of Ushuaia. You can book many tours that leave from Ushuaia and motor down to Isla Martillo to observe the penguins that nest on the island. Keep in mind that access to the island is typically restricted to guided tours, most tours don't land on the island. A tour that allows you to actually go on the island is more expensive, so be well informed before you book, so that you book the right tour.
