Witton Lakes are in North Birmingham in the West Midlands.
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Свиязь, Серая утка and good numbers of Малая поганка. Lower fish numbers mean Чомга are only in low numbers, Лебедь-шипун numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Гоголь and Большой крохаль occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Чирок-свистунок, Широконоска, Камышница, Лысуха and Серая цапля though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Сизая чайка and unusually for such an inland site Моевка.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Чиж and Московка, Ополовник, Лазоревка and Большая синица are numerous. During Spring/Summer Серая славка, Пеночка-весничка, Теньковка, Славка-черноголовка, Воронок, Деревенская ласточка and Чёрный стриж can be seen. Речная крачка regularly turn up on passage.
With Birmingham being England's second largest city, directions from the city centre are difficult so press P on map, to the small car park (7 spaces - free) on Faulkners Farm Drive, this car park can fill up quickly especially at weekends.
