Description

Tehidy Woods is a popular public woodland area. It has numerous footpaths and walkways through the trees and around the shallow lake and ponds. A stream runs through the valley and footpaths can be taken out of the woods along the North Cliffs of Cornwall.

The woods are easier to watch during the winter months and there is a feeding area in the Rose Garden where you can sit and see woodland species visiting the feeders. These birds include Большой пёстрый дятел, Сойка, Обыкновенный поползень, Лазоревка, Московка, Большая синица and Ополовник. Other birds here include Зелёный дятел, Чиж, Зяблик, Черноголовый щегол, Зарянка, Лесная завирушка, Желтоголовый королёк, Красноголовый королёк and Белобровик in winter.

The ponds are shallow and do not hold many birds but you will find Лебедь-шипун, Малая поганка, Хохлатая чернеть, Кряква, Камышница, Серебристая чайка and Озерная чайка here. There is currently a pair of Мандаринка in residence and Обыкновенный зимородок can often been seen.

In summer Теньковка and Славка-черноголовка can be seen and heard but there is a very large and noisy Rookery here too which can be distracting! Обыкновенная пищуха are scarce but recorded occasionally at the west end of the woods. Very occasionally the woods can attract migrants and the odd scarcity like Зарничка, Мухоловка-пеструшка, Серая мухоловка and once a Тусклая пеночка.

Access

Tehidy Woods are located along the north Cornwall coast, north of the town of Camborne. There are two main car parks, one at the north along the B3301 and another at the south from Mountwhistle Road. Click on the P in the map for directions. There is a cafe with toilet facilities at the south car park.

From the south car park, the path off to the left is best as it is a designated Nature Area with no access to dogwalkers. This takes you past the lakes and through the woods. It is then a circular walk up to the Rose Garden if you want to visit the feeders. The walking route shown on the map is about 1,8 mile (3 km).

Extra info

BEWARE OF THE SQUIRRELS AND RATS! The woods are a very popular place with the general public and families with small children. They feed the Squirrels, which in turn attracts rats. Best to avoid at weekends if at all possible, parking can be an issue.
