This reserve is mainly tidal salt marsh with some grazing pasture and scrub.
The area is a magnet for winter migrant waterbirds, including geese. The hedgerows and scrub harbour summer migrants and Болотный лунь are frequent visitors.
Although Old Hall Marshes can be reached by car, foot or bike, the reserve itself is only accessible on foot. One can easily spend a day exploring the reserve, so driving there would save both energy and time. There is a bus service to Tollesbury, approx 2 miles away.
The car park is accessible through a private drive and care should be taken as children may be playing. All gates must be left closed. Although the reserve is open every day, the car park is only open, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. The gates are liable to be locked after 5pm. The postcode is CM9 8TP.
The reserve trails are unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There are no toilets nor any other facilities. Ensure you have enough food and drink and suitable clothing for an exposed environment. If a dog is taken, it must be kept on a lead at all times to avoid disturbance to the wildlife.
The RSPB website proposes two circular routes, a long (6 miles) and a short (3 miles) one. Allow time for bird watching!
