Large remote commercial forest mostly at 3/400 metres, surrounds the Usk reservoir. Good for churring Обыкновенный козодой and roding Вальдшнеп on summer evenings.

Description

Glasfynydd Forest has mostly moorland and woodland species eg Черноголовый чекан, Белая куропатка, Обыкновенная горихвостка, Бекас, Гаршнеп, Дербник, Пустельга обыкновенная and Красный коршун. In winter Серый сорокопут, Клёст-еловик, Снегирь, Чиж and Горная чечетка. Few birds on the reservoir but Чирок-свистунок, Серая цапля and Большой крохаль possible. Оляпка and Горная трясогузка below the dam. For Обыкновенный козодой, look for a recently felled forest area with regrowth of bracken, bramble etc - only active after dark between May and August.

Access

From Swansea take A4067 Tawe valley road then left two miles beyond Danyrogof caves. From A40 Brecon/Llandovery road, turn south from Trecastle. Buses through Trecastle regularly. Train station at Llandovery. The circular walk around the reservoir is 8 km.
