One of the best areas of semi-natural woodland in Northumberland, with a good selection of woodland birds
Allenbanks is a good site for the 'woodland four' of Пеночка-трещотка, Обыкновенная горихвостка, Мухоловка-пеструшка and Лесной конёк, though the first and last have become scarce or even missing in recent years, perhaps due to disturbance by the ever increasing number of dog walkers. Also good for breeding Перевозчик, Оляпка, Горная трясогузка and Серая мухоловка.
Bus 685 from Newcastle upon Tyne to Carlisle stops just to the north of the site, with birding opportunities immediately after alighting; alternatively, take the train to Bardon Mill and cycle the 3 km along lanes and paths through Beltingham. There is also a car park at the north end of the site. Click on the P in the map for directions.
Nearby Beltingham has three ancient Yew trees in the churchyard, thought to be around 800 years old.
