Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Средиземноморская чайка, Клуша and Озерная чайка. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Средний кроншнеп, Камнешарка, Песчанка and Перевозчик.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Речная крачка and Розовая крачка, but sometimes also Пестроносая крачка.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Средиземноморский буревестник can be observed. Small numbers of Тайфунник Бульвера can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Обыкновенный буревестник and Североатлантический малый буревестник.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Делавэрская чайка, Полярная чайка and, in 2011, a Желтоголовая кваква.
