The Douro Estuary Nature Reserve is the best place to watch shore birds in Porto. The reserve has two bird hides and is accessible by a walkway.
The Douro Estuary Nature Reserve is located on the south bank of the Douro River and encompassing an area of 62 hectares. It is an important resting place, feeding and shelter of many species of migratory birds (especially waders that move along the Atlantic coast). The reserve has a coastal front, a dune restinga called Cabedelo, an interior area of estuarine characteristics and also marshes. The reserve has two observatories accessible by walkway and a conditioned access zone (ZAC), this being the best way to ensure that everyone can enjoy the space with minimal disturbance. It is a great place for birding, the shore birds are everywhere. More than a hundred bird species have already been seen in the Douro estuary. See the birdlist below.
You can visit Douro Estuary Nature Reserve freely by the walkways that start from the visitor center and walk up to two observatories, namely one facing the marsh and another, just a few hundred meters away, goes to a vast sandy area that, according to the tide, is sometimes exposed and others is immersed. You can park nearby. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
