Description

Western Springs features a large lake surrounded by a small forest, scattered trees and lawns, and is filled with birdlife. The lake is home to a large number of birds including Black Swan and Eurasian Coot, and the endemic New Zealand Scaup and New Zealand Dabchick. On the circular path you can get close to several trees that provide roosting spots for Little Black Cormorant and Little Pied Cormorant. Ocassinally Royal Spoonbill are seen there as well. Moreover, it is also among the best places in Auckland to find a Shining Bronze Cuckoo from spring to fall.

Beyond birds, you can also see a vast number of eels from the bridges and the park is conveniently located next to the Auckland Zoo.

Access

Western Springs is a highly accessible location for visitors, located less than half an hour away from Auckland's CBD via public transport. If you're driving, there is usually plenty of parking available just across the road, although on sunny weekend days, it may be harder to find a spot due to the park's close proximity to the zoo. For those with mobility concerns, the park features a network of wheelchair-friendly paths that allow visitors to explore the area at their own pace. Additionally, the park has several benches and rest areas for those who need to take a break. For visitors' convenience, there are toilets available on the northern side of the park next to the playground.
