Short walk through lush forest in the Pureora Forest Park to a nice little forest lagoon.

Description

A lovely little walk through tall rimu and kahikatea that provide good forest habitat for endemics such as Rifleman, Whitehead, Tomtit, and North Island Robin. At the end of the walk, you come to the neat little lagoon - a shallow ephemeral wetland surrounded by swamp forest. The forest is also good for cuckoo and parrots: Long-tailed Koel and Shining Bronze Cuckoo are present spring and summer and New Zealand Kaka and Yellow-crowned Parakeet are established residents.

The access road is not that pleseant though.

Access

On the western side of Lake Taupo, turning from SH32, follow the gravel road Waihora Road as signposted for 7 km. Because of the long access and bad road condition, not suitable for all cars and a big minus for this birding site.

The walk itself is an easy 730m walk but not suitable for wheelchairs. A boardwalk at the lagoon helps you keep your feet dry.
