Description

The Shag Point - Matakaea Scenic Reserve lies on headland with cliff-top viewing areas overlooking flat rock platforms used by Spotted Shag and Stewart Island Shag (Otago) as roost and breeding site as well as by New Zealand fur seals. Looking out over the ocean, there are good chances to see some albatross and other seabirds. The area also has a rich Māori and coalmining history.
