Popular stop along the Milford Sound Highway, the Mirror lakes are famous for the way they reflect the surrounding scenery.
Under native forest a 400m board walk loop takes you from the carpark down to Mirror Lakes, with several platforms to take pictures and for birding. It is just a nice spot for a little break in general. On and around the lake you can, among others, find the endemic New Zealand Scaup as well as the harder to spot New Zealand Fernbird, Spotless Crake, and Baillon's Crake. The surrounding forest gives you the opportunity to spot three parrot species, Yellow-crowned Parakeet, New Zealand Kaka, and Kea, and many passerines such as South Island Robin, Rifleman, Mohua (Yellowhead), and Pipipi (Brown Creeper).
From Te Anau towards Milford Sound the Mirror Lakes and the carpark are on the lefthand side of the Milford Sound Highway 94, about 45 minutes from Te Anau. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The short boardwalk is wheelchair accessible.
