Description
The Empese and Tondense Heide is an open area of about 260 hectare. The different habitats of dry and wet heather and grasslands interspersed with fens and scattered trees and bushes guarantee a bird-rich environment. A very good area to see Обыкновенная овсянка and Лесной конёк which are very numerous here. Other bird-sounds are also everywhere and in the open fields birds like Обыкновенная кукушка, Тростниковая овсянка, Серая славка, Варакушка and Белый аист are easy to see. Also the rare Обыкновенный жулан and Иволга are sometimes seen here. Around the fens you can see Малая поганка, Чибис, Малый зуёк and during migration many different waders can turn up here. The amount of waders depends on the water level. In dry conditions their are less birds. The area is also worth visiting for it's insects and plants. Many rare species of grasshoppers, dragonflies and butterflies live in the area and different species of orchids can be found here.

Nederlands: De Empese en Tondense Heide is een open terrein van circa 260 hectare. De verschillende leefgebieden van droge en natte heide en graslanden worden afgewisseld met vennen en verspreide bomen en struiken en zijn een garantie voor veel vogels. Een heel goed gebied om Обыкновенная овсянка en Лесной конёк te zien die hier zeer talrijk zijn. Vogelzang is overal en in de open velden zijn vogels als Обыкновенная кукушка, Тростниковая овсянка, Серая славка, Варакушка en Белый аист goed te zien. Ook de zeldzame Обыкновенный жулан en Иволга worden hier soms gezien. Rondom de vennen zie je Малая поганка, Чибис, Малый зуёк en tijdens de trek kunnen hier veel verschillende steltlopers opduiken. Het aantal steltlopers is afhankelijk van de waterstand. In droge omstandigheden zijn er minder vogels. Het gebied is ook een bezoek waard vanwege de insecten en planten. Er leven veel zeldzame soorten sprinkhanen, libellen en vlinders en er zijn verschillende soorten orchideeën te vinden.

Access
There is a big parking on the Hallsedijk in Empe (See the P on the map). From there you can choose from two well marked walking trails. The red trail is 5 km en leads you through the heart of the area. The yellow trail is 7.5 km and makes an extra loop through the hay meadows on the backside of the area. These meadows are less visited than the central part of the nature reserve. For birds this meadow area is most interesting when the water levels are high and some meadows are partly inundated.

Nederlands: Er is een grote parkeerplaats aan de Hallsedijk in Empe (zie de P op de kaart). Van daaruit kun je kiezen uit twee goed gemarkeerde wandelroutes. Het rode pad is 5 km en leidt je door het hart van het gebied. Het gele pad is 7,5 km lang en maakt een extra lus door de hooilanden aan de achterkant van het gebied. Deze weilanden worden minder bezocht dan het centrale deel van het natuurgebied. Voor vogels is dit weidegebied het meest interessant als de waterstanden hoog zijn en sommige weilanden gedeeltelijk onder water staan.
