Short trail to a freshwater spring surrounded by saltwater mangroves. An observation tower gives a view over the forest canopy.
Peten Tucha is a mangrove sanctuary and a perfect unspoiled wetland. From the main Rio Lagartos road a 1 km trail leads to a pond that is actually a flowing fresh water spring. The pond is home to crocodiles. One side of the path is on an elevated boardwalk through the wetlands of a mangrove hammock. The other side is a smooth well shaded pathway and both converge at a tall observation tower that has a magnificent view over the forest canopy. Some of the interesting birds you can encounter here are American Pygmy Kingfisher, Boat-billed Heron, Yucatan Wren, Yucatan Bobwhite and Mexican Sheartail.
On the road from Rio Lagartos to Las Coloradas between kilometer 8 and 9, when the road has just made a left turn, you find the entrance of the hiking path Sendero Peten Tucha. Park at the beginning of the trail and explore the trail from there on foot. Along the trail you will find some well shaded benches. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The trail is 1 km long, so in total 2 km there and back.
