Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Болотный лунь but also Степной лунь (early-mid spring) and Луговой лунь (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Степная пустельга and Кобчик (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, Золотистая щурка and Сизоворонка. Малый жаворонок arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Рыжепоясничная ласточка, and pipits, including Краснозобый конёк. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see Золотистая ржанка and Чибис. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
